Golf Cart Safety and Local Driving Rules in Costa Rica

Driver steering a golf cart slowly on a quiet resort road in Costa Rica

Safety first, fun second

Golf carts are easy to drive, which is exactly why it is easy to forget they are still vehicles. Most incidents with carts come from speed on hills, too many passengers, or driving where carts do not belong. This guide covers practical safety advice for Los Sueños. It is general guidance, not legal advice: resort rules, your rental contract and Costa Rican law always take precedence.

Where golf carts belong

Golf carts are low-speed vehicles designed for resorts, golf courses and private communities. Use your rental cart within Los Sueños Resort & Marina. Do not drive a golf cart on highways such as Route 34 (the Costanera Sur), which carries fast traffic, trucks and buses. For trips to Jacó, Herradura town or anywhere outside the resort, use a car, taxi or shuttle.

If you are unsure whether a route is appropriate, ask us before you go.

Resort rules

  • Follow the speed limits and signs posted on resort roads.
  • Respect gatehouses and security staff instructions.
  • Park only in designated areas; do not block driveways, paths or entrances.
  • Give pedestrians the right of way, especially around the marina village and beach club.
  • Follow any additional rules from your property or homeowners’ association.

Driving on hills

Many Los Sueños roads are steep. Go slowly downhill and brake early and gently, never sharply. Avoid sharp turns at speed. When parking on a slope, set the parking brake and turn the wheels toward the curb. Keep both hands on the wheel on steep sections.

Passengers and children

  • Never carry more people than there are seats.
  • Everyone stays seated with arms and legs inside while moving.
  • Hold small children securely and never let them ride on laps of the driver.
  • Children should not drive. Driver requirements are set out in your rental contract — only responsible adults should drive.
  • Secure loose items so they do not fall out on turns.

Alcohol

Do not drink and drive. Costa Rica enforces drunk-driving laws strictly, and alcohol makes hills and tight turns far more dangerous. After a night at the marina, choose a designated driver or take a taxi.

Night driving and weather

Use the cart’s lights after dark and drive more slowly, as visibility on resort roads can be limited. In the rainy season (roughly May to November), afternoon storms are common: roads become slippery, so slow down, increase stopping distances and wait out heavy downpours rather than driving through them.

If something goes wrong

If the cart stops working, makes unusual noises or is damaged, park safely and contact us right away at +506 6227 3248 by phone or WhatsApp. Support is available 24/7. In an emergency, Costa Rica’s emergency number is 911.
