Staying at Los Sueños Resort: Transportation Options
· 7 min read

Two different transportation questions
Transportation at Los Sueños breaks down into two separate problems. First, how do you get from the airport to Herradura? Second, how do you get around once you are inside the resort? The best answer to each is usually different, and many visitors combine two or three options over the course of a trip.
Getting to Los Sueños
Most international travelers arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) outside San José. From there the drive to Herradura generally takes about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic and the time of day, mostly via Route 27 and then Route 34 along the coast. Some visitors fly into Liberia (LIR) instead, which is a considerably longer drive.
- Private shuttle. A driver meets you at the airport and takes you straight to your property. Popular with families and groups who do not want to drive after a long flight.
- Rental car. Gives the most freedom for day trips to Jacó, Carara National Park or further along the coast. Parking and resort access rules still apply.
- Shared shuttle. A lower-cost option with fixed schedules and stops.
- Taxi or ride-hailing. Available from the airport; confirm the price before you go.
Getting around inside the resort
Once you arrive, the resort layout matters most. The marina village, beach club, hotel, golf course and residential neighborhoods are spread across the waterfront and the surrounding hills. Walking is pleasant in the early morning, but the climbs and the midday heat make repeated trips tiring, especially for children and older travelers.
That is why golf carts are so common at Los Sueños. A cart parked at your door makes short trips to the beach, pools, restaurants and docks quick and easy, and you can leave the car in the garage. Our carts start at $64.99/day with free delivery to eligible properties. See the Los Sueños golf cart rental page.
Comparing the options
| Option | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Golf cart | Daily trips inside the resort | Not for highways such as Route 34 |
| Rental car | Day trips outside Los Sueños | Parking, fuel and driving on unfamiliar roads |
| Private shuttle | Airport transfers | Book ahead; fixed price per trip |
| Taxi | Occasional trips to Jacó or Herradura town | Availability varies, especially at night |
| Walking | Short, flat routes | Hills and heat |
A typical combination
A common plan looks like this: a private shuttle from the airport, a golf cart delivered to your condo for the whole stay, and a taxi or a day of car rental for a trip to Jacó or a national park. You get door-to-door convenience on arrival, effortless daily movement in the resort, and flexibility for excursions without paying for a car that sits unused most of the week.
Trips to Jacó and beyond
Jacó is about 15 minutes away by road, but the route uses Route 34, which is not suitable for golf carts. Use a car or taxi for Jacó. Our page on golf cart rental near Jacó explains this in more detail.
